Olive Cake (Olive Pomace)

Olive Cake, also known as olive pomace, is a byproduct of the olive oil extraction process. During this process, olives are crushed using mills and then centrifuged to separate the oil from the solid materials. The remaining by-products include pits and cake. Olive Cake consists of the crushed olive flesh, skins, and remaining bits of pits after the initial oil extraction. The physical and chemical characteristics of olive cake make it an excellent alternative to fossil fuels for power, heat, and process heat production.

    CM Biomass primarily sources olive cake from regions including Iberia, North Africa, and Turkey. These regions are known for their extensive olive oil production, which generates significant quantities of olive cake as byproducts.

  • Availability
    Availability

    Olive cake production occurs year-round, peaking from October to February, when about 80% of the olive mass becomes olive cake during oil extraction. Our suppliers also provide olive pits along with the cake. In regions where CM Biomass operates, approximately 10 million MT of olive cake are produced annually.

    Sustainability

    Over 95% of the biomass we supply originates from residue streams, including sawmills, vegetable oil production, and deshelling processes. By repurposing these materials, we support local waste management and provide an alternative
    energy source, reducing fossil fuel reliance.
